Tiktok can often seem like a new challenge, one that can’t be conquered. Why is that? What about Tiktok can come across as intimidating? It could be the fact that over one billion users are on Tiktok every year. Or maybe it’s the fact that Tiktok’s ad revenue makes up 5% of the digital ad space. To be fair, these are great reasons by themselves causing mild trepidation in any business owner, especially those who are looking to expand their reach. What if you could use Tiktok to your advantage? It comes down to knowledge of how it works and by extension how it can work for you.

There are a number of factors that go into audience engagement relating to any video posted to Tiktok. Here are the ones that will be potentially applicable to you and your business:

1. Tiktok starts every video by showing it to a batch of users. It’s a relatively small pool, so you have to grab their attention within the first few seconds.

2. Points are assigned to each video worth different “numerical” amounts. One like is worth one point, a comment is worth two, and rewatching the video is worth five. Various other interactions are also assigned a value but there are what I would consider the ones necessary for consistency. (Note from the author: this is not a proven system, as Tiktok’s parent company has not confirmed the exact specifics regarding their algorithm. There is a system in place and this is a system that has been made to be an assumption but has not been confirmed.)

3. The system heavily favors interaction. Any interaction on a Tiktok could be considered positive (with some exceptions), so making engagement worthwhile is the dominating factor.

4. Video watch time matters. If your video is shown to someone and they swipe out of it or don’t watch it all the way through, Tiktok will not push it to a bigger audience.

This is a lot to take in, but I promise it’s going to better guide your videos to success by knowing a rough idea of how the system works. If you know the behind the scenes, you know how to put on a can’t miss show.

The application is the next step in using Tiktok to your advantage, and it’s as simple as following the algorithm. You know that it shows your video to a smaller audience, so consider the potential audience. What are you wanting to show them and how can you grab their attention? We know interaction is important and some interactions hold more weight than others. Likes are important, but what if they aren’t watching the whole thing? Think through every facet to attract your target demographic. Each aspect builds on the previous when it comes to the algorithm, so it may take some time to figure out what content works best.

With all that said, don’t be afraid to try! Just because one video didn’t work doesn’t mean all of them won’t. Remember, you’re drawing people in to get them in the door and not just to run a popular account on social media platforms. Leverage new ideas into your content, draw them in-both figuratively and literally.
